Health Risks and Dangers of Chiropractic… The Truth Revealed

    January 16th, 2010

Many scare tactics are used by the medical profession so patients don’t go to other types of providers.  One lately is telling patients that Chiropractic is dangerous and has a lot of risks to it.  Many of these accusations are unfounded and local chiropractor, Dr. Russell Brokstein of Freehold, NJ feels it’s important to educate his local communities of Freehold, Marlboro, Manalapan, Howell, Jackson and Colts Neck, NJ of the truth.  Check out the following video where Dr. Brokstein discusses the issue:

Bone Density, Osteoporosis and Osteopenia can improve with Chiropractic!

    January 6th, 2010

Bone Density Increases under Chiropractic Care. A study reported in the September, 2002 issue of the Journal of Vertebral Subluxation Research finds that increases in Bone Mineral Density occur in patients who have been under chiropractic care for a year or more.  This helps those patients suffering with Osteoporosis and Osteopenia.

In the 34-month study, 33 patients, all over the age of 21, who presented themselves to a private practitioner’s office were admitted to the study. Before their first chiropractic adjustment, each patient had their Bone Mineral Density (BMD) measured. While following their doctor’s care plan and getting adjusted, follow-up BMD studies were done at 1 month, 6 months and 12 months. At the 1 month and 6 month re-exams, the changes in BMD were insignificant. However, at the 12 month interval the results were more encouraging. According to the authors,”3 cases that presented with a BMD lower than what is considered normal moved into the normal range on their one-year follow-up examination.”

Research repeatedly proves that chiropractic care can produce remarkable changes in how the human body functions.

When function is improved, health is improved.

Preventing Back and Shoulder Injuries Shoveling Snow

    December 21st, 2009

Dr. Russell Brokstein, chiropractor and owner of Hometown Family Wellness Center in Freehold, NJ,  notes how shoveling snow is one of the biggest causes of injury every winter.  “I see patients from Freehold, Marlboro, Jackson, Howell, Colts Neck and other surrounding towns every year that come in with injuries after shoveling snow, especially back pain and shoulder pain.  I try to educate our communities how to prevent injuries from occurring.”

According to the US Consumer Products Safety Commission in 2007, over 118,000 people were treated in hospital ER’s, doctor offices and other medical settings.  Injuries ranged from sprains and strains particularly of the back and shoulders.

Before shoveling snow, check with your doctor first as it’s a strenuous activity.  It places high stress on the heart.  If you do not exercise regularly or have a heart condition, you should consider hiring somebody.

Dress appropriately in layers, and wear boots with proper treading so you don’t slip.

Clear snow early and often, by shoveling periodically as the snow accumulates.

    More important tips:

Warm up your muscles ahead of time.  Treat shoveling snow like exercise.  Warm up, and stretch your muscles for about 10 minutes before shoveling snow.

Pace yourself by taking frequent breaks and prevent dehydration by drinking plenty of water.  If you start to have chest pain, shortness of breath, or other signs of heart attack, stop shoveling and seek emergency care.

Use a shovel that is comfortable for your height and strength.  By spacing your hands on the shovel grip you can increase your leverage.

Try not to lift the snow.  Pushing the snow is much better.  If you must lift, lift smaller loads and do not twist or toss the snow over your shoulder or to the side…walk to where you want to dump it.  Twisting motions stess your back and cause damage to your discs.

Squat and lift with your legs apart, knees bent and back straight.  Do NOT bend at your waist.

Holdinig a shovel full of snow with your arms outstretched puts too much weight on your spine.  Never remove deep snow all at once…do it in pieces.

If you do get injured, chiropractic has the highest ratings in treatment of back, disc and other spinal problems.  On top of that, chiropractic as maintenance of the spine can help prevent injuries from occurring, even while shoveling snow.

Freehold Chiropractor Reduces Migraines and Other Headaches without Drugs

    December 14th, 2009

“What is the overwhelming “common” cause of 90+% of all headaches? Our clinical experience demonstrates that the patient with “stress headaches” has this in common with the patient who has “menstrual headaches”. The patient with “migraines” has this in common with the patient who suffers from “cluster headaches”. That common denominator is… A condition called Atlas Neuro Vascular Syndrome which compromises the integrity between the brain and body and sets the stage, (loads the chamber with live ammunition) and clinically is the underlying cause of 95% of all headaches.”
Dr. Finnigan is the author of Life Beyond Headaches,

A February, 2001 report from the Foundation for Chiropractic Education and Research finds that chiropractic patients experience improvement in the frequency and severity of their headaches.

The study, a literature review performed at Duke University in Durham, NC, collected information from more than 2500 sources.

According to the report, Chiropractic adjustments “appeared to result in immediate improvement in headache severity” in patients experiencing cervicogenic headache.

Foundation for Chiropractic Education and Research, February, 2001

Dr. Russell Brokstein, Chiropractor and owner of Hometown Family Wellness Center in Freehold NJ explains: “The reason why headaches respond so well to chiropractic care is because of two nerves called the Lessor and Greater Occipital nerves. These nerves are at the very top of the spine and extend up and into your head. If your top two vertebrae subluxate or misalign,  you can have pressure on these and other nerves and that nerve interference can cause headache pain. When you get adjusted, you remove pressure on these nerves and that’s why so many people with headaches do so well with chiropractic care.”

    Motivation

    October 14th, 2009
The definition of motivation is the most misunderstood definition because of what the word implies in so many other arenas. If someone is tired, they may say they’re not motivated. If someone feels depressed, they may blame their lack of motivation. If someone is lazy they may indicate it’s because they don’t have any interest in the particular endeavor and their motivation is gone. All of these explanations have some element of truth, however, true motivation comes from a deliberate, concise, request for motivation by the individual.

How to get it? It must be deliberately sought after through specific action. Motivation towards any endeavor is not natural, although it may appear so at first due to someone’s interest or desire for the short term benefit of something.

Motivation can be generated at will by anyone towards any endeavor…it’s all about taking action!

Some people think motivation is an inner drive or feeling. They think it’s something that gets sparked by one of the five senses. If they see something they like and they want it, they may think that motivation is what causes them to get it or “act” on it. This is not true. That’s not motivation, that’s impulse or desire.

These people would define motivation as a desire that causes you to act. This is wrong. Real motivation is an act that causes a desire or drive! This is what makes motivation such a valuable tool in sales. If you take action, you’ll become motivated!

What’s been stopping you from pursuing Chiropractic? Motivation? Then take action! Simply call the number above for a free consult.

Some people choose not to see a chiropractor. But why?

    October 14th, 2009

Got back pain? I was just thinking about why you may not have taken the first step by coming in for a free evaluation. Here’s what we came up with:

    1. You don’t like chiropractors. If this is true, it’s okay, we’re not offended. Most people have a totally wrong idea about
chiropractors. They don’t realize we teach and promote much more than good posture and fix backs. Our goal is to help you not only eliminate your back pain, but also to help you avoid a ton of other problems people experience, even if they do practice a healthy lifestyle.

    2. You may not know what a chiropractor does. I know we promised to get your back pain eliminated quick, but how do we do this? It’s really very simple, yet complicated. Simple for you and very complicated for us.

Once we give you a series of tests to determine exactly what is causing your back pain, we then come up with a plan of action. Sometimes this requires X-rays, sometimes MRI, sometimes it requires nothing but regular adjustments, sometimes nothing at all but a few exercises you can do on your own.

We can’t promise that we’ll make a good match, but the most urgent thing for you to do is to get the answer to what is really wrong with you and what is causing the pain.

    3. You may temporarily be feeling better due to pain medication or a relapse in pain. This would be great news if you had determined exactly what is causing the sporadic problems. Otherwise, you’re just masking the problem and could be setting yourself up for disaster.

If any of these reasons ring true, we hope you can at least come give it a try. Let us give you a free evaluation and at least have you walk away with the knowledge of what’s causing the pain. Don’t put this off! Simply call the number at the top of the screen and we’ll get schedule you for a no obligation free consultation!

Waiting or procrastinating? Start chiropractic today!

    August 14th, 2009
People choose not to see a Chiropractor for several reasons. One could be that their pain has went away and they feel that they don’t need treatment any longer. Second, it could be because they’ve decided to go the medicine route. Third, and most common, is that people generally procrastinate.

I don’t necessarily agree with the first or second reason, but I do want to say if number 3 applies to you, I understand. However, I am not going to let you off that easy. ;-)

Procrastination is not only a major reason people live with pain, it’s also the cause of many other failures in life. Don’t be like the the person in the picture above: sitting, waiting and wondering, instead of taking action.

Patience in choosing a Chiropractor is good. But by waiting too long, you reinforce stagnancy. All the while, the pain get’s worse! If you’ve not yet come into our office for an evaluation, call the number at the top of the screen and don’t put it off any longer. If you’ve been intending to come in but you’ve been caught up in the "I’ll get there tomorrow" mode, my hope is that this little note can push you off the road of procrastination and into the office. All the lights will never be on green.

There’s never going to be the perfect time to get started. Make the commitment to Chiropractic and begin feeling better and gaining a better quality of life today.
